A Sophisticated Modern Farm House

We recently started working on a new project for a longtime client who is building a new house. The house will be located in a beautiful setting with a meadow and a ravine and as such, rather than taking a more modern approach as we did in their former home, we are going in a slightly more casual, but no less chic direction this time around. My client, who is very well versed in design and has excellent taste wants a modern farmhouse, but hesitates to use that terminology too freely as it typically brings to mind the notion of the type of farmhouse designed by America’s HGTV Sweethearts who shall remain nameless. We are thinking more “Napa Valley modern” rather than shiplap and barn doors. In culling inspiration for this project, I came across this stunning modern farmhouse in Palo Alto, California designed by the talented sister duo behind M. Elle Design. The materials, architectural details, and airiness of the space give it a relaxed farmhouse vibe without sacrificing an ounce of sophistication. When executed this way, the idea of a modern farmhouse feels much less like a trend and much more like a timeless motif.

      1. Thank you, thank you For showing another (regreshing) way of interpreting Modern farmhouse! Ive become so wEary of the wildfire mAss-interpretIOn of this sTyle, and the misnomer of shiplap. you’ll find as you continue your research in preparation for this project that shiplap is actually the term for a specific joinery For planking. Tongue and groove is another. They each have their purpose. You have such a great eye, this projecg will be stunning!
