Dissecting the Details: Kevin Walsh

Hello LDV readers, Nancy of Marcus Design here, happy to share a Dissecting the Details post with you! I’m focussing on the work of Kevin Walsh, owner of the sought-after Bear Hill Interiors design firm and store. He has a penchant for tailored sophistication with a nod to timeless traditional design, so it makes complete sense to learn that he was named one of Trad Home’s 10 New Trads of 2016. Today, I’m dissecting four of the factors Kevin utilizes in his serene and classic living room designs. They are truly rooms you wouldn’t ever want to leave, and here’s why:

CALM COHESIVE COLOR PALETTE

There is nothing more relaxing and inviting that a soothing palette. I personally am particularly drawn to his use of all shades of blue, though any color scheme he selects seems to give the same sophisticated calming effect.

ONE MAIN FOCAL POINT

Whether it’s a armoire flanked by artwork, a dresser or a gorgeous fireplace, Kevin expertly draws you into the room with a clear and creative focal point. The other elements in the room are situated to enhance this, and the overall affect gives those within the space a perfect vignette for their eyes to rest on.

FURNISHINGS IN PAIRS

Nothing says traditional better that bilateral symmetry; and repeating occasional or upholstered chairs, stools, or benches in pairs gives that dramatic timeless look.

ORIGINAL ART

Original and captivating artwork is one of the ingredients that must be mentioned in Kevin’s recipe for a successful living room design. I love his preference for abstract art, which keep the rooms very fresh and mixes eras and styles.  And if you look back at the photos throughout this post, you will notice that whether the focal point is a fireplace or a stately dresser, the art displayed above them helps to draw the eye into the space and reinforce the focal point.

So there you have it, 4 key elements that Kevin Walsh uses to create luxe living spaces that combine a modern and traditional sensibility. Hop to Kevin’s website at Bear Hill Interiors to see more of his stunning portfolio here, and don’t forget to follow him on his lovely & inspiring Instagram feed here.

  1. I LOVE that Kevin’s design show client’s homes with a TV both visible and concealed. Most people do watch TV in their homes and it is rare that you see a room published showing that without it being a screening room. Thank you!
