A Chic Dining Room by Shelley Johnstone at the Lake Forest Showhouse

Spring is showhouse season all over the country! The San Francisco Decorators Showhouse just opened last week, while the Lake Forest Showhouse opened on Saturday and Kips Bay officially opens this week. One of my favorite rooms that I have seen come out of all of these beautiful showhouses so far is this chic dining room by Shelley Johnstone at the Lake Forest Showhouse. The Howard Van Doren Shaw Home was originally built as a summer home in 1922 and sits on more than two-acres of beautifully-manicured gardens. The interiors were transformed for the event by a slew of local Chicago-area talent, including Shelley.

For her fresh interpretation of a classic dining room, Shelley drew inspiration from the architect’s “elegant country home aesthetic” and opted to design a space that felt both elegant and relaxed. The walls are upholstered in a chic camel stripe, while draperies in a floral printed linen and vintage chippendale-style rattan chairs ground the space and make it feel a bit more casual and inviting. The sumptuous upholstered walls are juxtaposed with a pale blue lacquered ceiling while a Big Bloom photograph and an Italian chandelier punctuate the room. A French console, Chippendale mirror, and framed chinoiserie add an element of glamour to this beautiful room. It is evident that no detail was spared in this lovely dining room and the results are stunning!
