Designer to Watch: David Kaihoi

If you have yet to hear of David Kaihoi, I am certain you will be seeing much more from him soon. David started his career as a fine artist and moved to New York for his wife to pursue her career in fashion. While working as an art installer, he met Miles Redd, who eventually offered him a job and became his mentor in the world of interior design. After nearly ten years of working with Miles, David has stepped out on his own establishing his eponymous design firm. You may remember his stunningly beautiful–and tiny 390 square foot apartment which appeared in House Beautiful back in 2010. More recently, the apartment David designed for Town & Country‘s style director, Whitney Robinson was featured in Metropolitan Home back in the spring.

Not only am I looking forward to seeing more work from this talented designer, I am also excited to use the chic new fabrics from the collection he recently launched with Schumacher in client projects. The collection features fresh patterns with a hint of ethnic influences executed through a modern point of view. The color palette is crisp and vibrant, ensuring its versatility. It’s always special to see the evolution of new generations of designers. Miles Redd worked for Bunny Williams, whose influence is evident in his work, though their aesthetics vary quite a bit. David Kaihoi and Nick Olsen worked for Miles Redd and you can certainly see a bit of Miles in the younger two’s work– the saturated color, the bold statements, and the moxie to mix modern and traditional. While the influence from the former carries into the latter, they each have their own unique perspective and in David’s case (all of them really!), he is certainly making a name for his himself in the design world.
