The Style Files: Young Huh

Young Huh is a talented interior designer based in New York City. Just as with so many of the top talents in this industry, design is actually a second career for Young who practiced law after graduating from Fordham University. A native of Detroit, Young has had a lifelong appreciation for  art and design history. Her discerning eye and talent allow her to execute a variety of styles– from classic to contemporary– in an effortless way. Young’s work has been featured in House Beautiful, Traditional Home, ELLE DECOR, and Domino among other publications. She has also received the coveted distinction of being named one of “Five Young Interior Designers on the Rise” by Vogue. Over the past couple of years, Young and I have become friends and this year, we’ve had the opportunity to get to know each other better as we are both “Insiders” for the National Kitchen and Bath Association. Young is not only talented, but she is a truly kind person, whether she is doling out advice to her friends or lovingly preparing a beautiful Sunday meal for her family. I hope you’ll enjoy getting to know Young as much as I have!

Paloma Contreras: How would you describe your style?

Young Huh: I hope my work reflects the clients objectives, but the common thread is that its always clean, classic and luxe. I like to think of it as a forward thinking progression of classic design. And by classic I also include modernism. But some editor friends said I should just call it a cool take on pretty. Ha!

PC: Has living in New York influenced your aesthetic in any way?

YH: Yes! I’ve wanted to live in New York ever since I first visited in 4th grade. I’ve never wanted to live anywhere else. I guess I’m attracted to the constant activity, bubbling of new ideas, shifting populations and even the grit. I’m always embracing the latest product while grounding myself in tradition, and everything has just a little bit of grit. Though with rooms I call it edge.

PC: What does your home say about you?

YH: My home is calm, classic, pretty with layers of things I’ve collected over the years. It is also a place where I try new things. I designed my home well over 10 years ago, so I’m ready to try another round of experiments!

PC: Where do you turn for inspiration?

YH: Reading is often my greatest source of inspiration. Also, movies, travel and talking to people. Having quiet time to just let my imagination roam is also critical.

PC: Who are your personal style icons?

YH: Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, David Bowie, Simone Rocha

PC: What is your guilty pleasure?

YH: Wine and potato chips. shhhh!

Snip20160801_29{Wine and potato chips would totally work in this tablescape Young shared on Instagram, right?}

PC: What trait do you most admire in a person?

YH: Integrity. People who do what they say and say what they do- that’s very very important to me.

PC: Who or what has been your greatest professional influence?

YH: Winning the Innovation in Design Award by Cottages and Gardens magazine was really a turning point in my career because of the mentorship given to me by the judges, Matthew Patrick Smyth and Tony Baratta, that year’s honoree Bunny Williams and EIC DJ Carey. They gave me such great advice and encouragement- it was what I needed to have the courage to take the next steps.

Young Huh WMPC: What is your idea of “living la dolce vita”?

YH: I’m sure its not surprise, but I love being at home. It’s the heartbeat of my life. I love to be cooking, reading, gardening, playing with my children, laughing with my friends, snuggling with my husband, and having fresh flowers everywhere.

PC: What can we look forward to next from you?

YH: I’ll be speaking about entertaining at the September Market at America’s Mart. I’ll also be unveiling a custom version of a Neirman Weeks fixture at What’s New Whats Next at 200 Lexington with some other designers. I’ll be shooting a pretty major project that I’ve been working on for a couple years now and have a few more tricks up my sleeve!
