Inspiration for our New House

{Ali Cayne’s West Village Townhouse– I love the crisp, white walls and fantastic mix of art.}

Fabian and I recently sold the house we’ve lived in for ten years and have purchased a new one in the heart of Houston. We bought our first house while I was still teaching– it feels like a lifetime ago! At the time, I was teaching at a high school in a suburb in the western Houston area, so we bought a house here, thinking it would be a great place to raise a family. Fast forward ten years and our lives have shaped up much differently than we once planned. We don’t have the phantom children we once imagined, but we both have demanding careers we both love, we travel quite often, and most importantly, we have each other and a life we love. This particular suburb is wonderful, but it hasn’t suited our lifestyle for a very long while. We finally decided to take the big leap a couple of months ago when we put our house on the market. It sold fairly quickly and we found a house that we love “inside the loop”, right in the center of everything in Houston.

We are super excited about this next chapter! Our new house is in great shape, but I will be making some cosmetic updates and am looking forward to a fresh decorating slate. I will be sharing the journey here on LDV as we update our new kitchen, bathrooms, and decorate the house. I’ve been in the mood for a more modern aesthetic, rooted in classic style, of course, so this will be a great opportunity to challenge myself beyond the look of our current house. We have a few more weeks until we close on the new house, but in the meantime, I’ve rounded up some inspiration images that illustrate the mood that I have in mind for our new place.

  1. Congratulations on the move! It’s so fun to have a new project.
    Among your inspirations, I think the ones that work best are where the setting is old/traditional. That makes the modern furniture pop by contrast. When the bones of a place are modern and so is the furniture, I find it a little cold. Sometimes I like it, for sure, but for living, for my own home, I want more soul and coziness.

  2. Congrats friend! Love the kitchen pics – I have darker painted cabinets with brass knobs like the above and I love them! Can’t wait to see what’s in store!!

  3. Inside the loop is perfect…..makes sense with what you’ve accomplished since living in the burbs. So happy for all your success and wish you happiness in your new home.

  4. I am so behind on my blog reading.:-/ Congrats on the new home, Paloma!! I, too, loved the kitchen in The Intern and immediately wanted to paint my already grey cabinets even darker after seeing that movie!! No doubt your new house is going to be beautiful and I can’t wait to follow along.
