A Dazzling Houston Home by Bruce Budd

The October issue of Architectural Digest is filled with some fantastic features. Everyone is buzzing about the new home Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent share with their darling daughter, Poppy, but I am particularly taken with the stunning Houston home designed by Bruce Budd. Upon seeing the feature, I was thrilled for a few reasons. Bruce recently sent me the kindest note about a post I had written about his famous carriage house earlier in the year, so I was delighted to see a new project of his, especially after having such a lovely interaction with him. I was doubly thrilled to find out it was a 1933 house in Houston’s River Oaks by John F. Staub who is arguably the most well-known and legendary architect to come out of our Bayou City.

The home was updated by Bruce in collaboration with┬áBute King Architects and features a stately lawn peppered with sculptures by artists including Georgia O’Keefe and Anish Kapoor. The interiors of the Georgian-style manse are classic and elegant, yet there is a feeling of lightness and effortlessness that makes the home feel welcoming rather than imposing, thanks to Bruce’s brilliant hand.

If you are familiar with Bruce’s work, I am certain┬áthat you will see a common thread between this gracious Houston home and the houses he designed for Bunny Mellon or his former carriage house. I am particularly in love with the two blue and white striped guest bedrooms! The first one is tented in a Bennison stripe and features a pair of beds from John Rosselli, while the second is my favorite. I love the chrome canopy bed, Billy Baldwin-style slipper chairs, and the more modern, yet completely timeless approach in that particular room. The entire house is stunning and is definitely a must-see, so be sure to read the article in the new issue of AD and take the full tour here.
