The Style Files: Kristen Buckingham

Kristen Buckingham Portrait

I have admired the work of Los Angeles-based interior designer, Kristen Buckingham for several years now. I remember seeing her beautiful home published in ELLE DECOR and admiring how full of life it was. Each piece within its walls looked special and felt like it formed part of a very personal collection of items that formed the Buckingham home. Kristen’s aesthetic puts a subversive spin on otherwise traditional design elements. I love the way she marries pieces from various periods, design movements, and cultures to create a perfectly layered look. Ultimately, Kristen fuses the modern and traditional, looking to the past for inspiration while creating harmonious spaces that suit the needs of present-day families.

Kristen’s eponymous showroom is one of the chicest shops in Los Angeles’ La Cienega Design Quarter, and is always one of my first stops when I am in town. Over the past several years, Kristen’s work has been featured in ELLE DECOR, C Magazine, and Traditional Home, among other publications. Last month, she was named to ELLE DECOR’s exclusive A-List. I recently had the opportunity to chat with Kristen about her signature style, the things that matter most, and about some exciting projects she has in the works. Enjoy!

Paloma Contreras: How would you describe your style?

Kristen Buckingham: It’s definitely personal; I love a beautiful space with a sense of collected elegance, but it has to have livability and humor. Also edgy, not overtly feminine.
