My Birthday Wish: A Wine Country Getaway

{Our Favorite Place to Stay in Napa: Solage Calistoga}

I am fortunate that my career allows me to travel often as it is something I need and crave tremendously. My husband, Fabian and I travel often for work, so when he asked me what I wanted for my birthday this year, I knew I wanted a little time away. This weekend, we will be heading to California to visit friends and then we’ll drive to Napa for the week. We enjoyed our last visit to Napa in February so much , that it seemed like the ideal place for the low-key, relaxing vacation we have both been craving. As I turn thirty-three today (one year older, one year wiser, right?), I can’t help but think about how fortunate I am to get another year of this amazing life and to spend it doing what I love so profoundly alongside my sweet husband and best friend.

Aside from spending time with Fabian, revisiting one of my favorite regions in the country, and imbibing delicious food and wine, one of the things I am most looking forward to as we embark on our trip to Napa this week is the architecture. I seem to find inspiration everywhere I turn in Napa. I love the style sensibility and lifestyle there and am more than ready to soak it all up. I am enamored by the farmhouse style architecture that is done so beautifully there. It feels like classic Americana and celebrates indoor/outdoor living. You’ll find that this round-up of my favorite projects by the iconic architecture firm, Backen, Gillam & Kroeger exemplifies the chic, effortless lifestyle of Northern California.

I’m counting down the days until our trip! Even though I asked Fabian to plan the trip as my birthday gift, I ended up taking the reigns myself (the joy of being a type A personality!), but I’d welcome any last minute recommendations you might have. Not surprisingly, our hotel, some of the wineries we plan to visit, and a few restaurants where we will be enjoying delicious dinners were designed by the talented team at Backen, Gillam & Kroeger.

If you’re heading to Napa anytime soon, you can check out my recap and recommendations from our trip earlier this year.

  1. Go to the Traditional Home Napa Valley Showhouse at Caldwell Vineyard in Napa……fabulous ……open until Nov.16.
    Farmhouse Inn in Forestville In Sonoma County is a must see and dinner there is a wonderful experience.

  2. Napa valley is one of my favorite spots in the whole world, a place my husband and I visit every year. We have stayed at many different places but currently favor the Hotel Yountville ( Yountville is a good place to stay anyway, not only because of its central location in the valley, but because it is a charming little town with fabulous restaurants. REDD is one of my favorites. As for wineries to visit, if you want to taste some truly outstanding wine, try off the beaten path places like the ridges flanking the valley. Viader on Howell Mountain is a place we visit every year. David Arthur Vineyards on Pritchard Hill is also outstanding. You will need to call small places like these in advance but they usually can give you an appointment. There are of course many many others, depending on the type of wine you like. Have a great trip!
