The Meaning of Luxury

Like beauty, it seems that the meaning of luxury is somewhat subjective. What is deemed luxurious by one person, may not really match another person’s definition. Whether luxury means wearing haute couture while dripping in diamonds, jetting off to a fabulous destination at the drop of a hat, or simply enjoying a nice turn-down service in your hotel room, the definition is something personal and different for each individual.

I have been given the honor of discussing the topic of luxury in The Waldorf Astoria’s Luxury Manifesto Blog which I am writing along with Christine Lu, an expert on the emerging luxury market in China. I would love to know more about what luxury means to you. Is it a certain level of service? Designer labels and Jet-setting travel? An attention to detail? The freedom and ability to engage in certain activities, whether that means regular, luxurious spa treatment or the simple joy of an hour with a good book and a glass of wine? How do you define luxury?

I’d love for you to join the conversation on the Waldorf Astoria’s Luxury Manifesto Facebook page!

Tell Me What You Think! leave a comment...

  1. Luxury is a lot of things and to me have a common denominator of indulgence, regardless of what each of us considers indulgent. One luxury we should all enjoy every day is an inviting bed, complete with a comfortable matress and super soft bedding. No excuse to live without them!
Good luck on your luxury blogging!

  2. Luxury to me is the freedom to do as I wish at any given moment. Whether that is hoping on a plane to a tropical destination (and staying at least 7 days!) or heading to the spa for a few hours of treatment. I think it’s important to slow life down and enjoy the small luxuries in life as well. Some might consider great food a luxury, although I consider it a privlidge. Maybe the same thing – but great food to me is a must. I nourishes your body, mind and spirit.

Best of luck in your luxury writing!

  3. I read once of a young woman who taught herself to be a trim carpenter as she remodeled her small home in California: luxury is having what you need when you need it. For her it was the tools and skills to make her dream home for herself, by herself. It’s a definition that lends itself to individual expression. Although personally I like the tools and skills part.

  4. Hmmm…
(Kind of irrelevant, I know, but)
Your image makes me think of the fabulous Loopita Bonita Lounger. That would make it TOTAL bliss!

Think I might be ready for the summer 🙂

  5. Luxury is something that rises above the ordinary, becoming extraordinary, for the sake of indulgence. Cotton can be quite lovely (and practical), but silk is luxurious. A simple macaroni dish is considered a “luxury” when sprinkled with shavings of black truffle. I believe luxury is found in what one considers rare yet valuable, whether that be objects, free time, etc.
