Inspired By: Life and Work

 A couple of weeks ago, I was shopping for accessories to style a couple of rooms for a client as we installed phase one of their project. I happened across a book called Life and Work by Malene Birger, a fashion designer out of Copenhagen, Denmark. I was originally drawn to the cover and large size of the book, but once I opened it up, I was completely captivated and bought two copies– one for my client and another for myself!  The book is a visual chronicle of Malene’s life and work, divided into chapters about her house in Mallorca, Spain as well as her home and studio in Copenhagen. Not only is Malene an accomplished fashion designer, she also has an amazing eye when it comes to designing spaces and recently launched Birger 1962, an extension of her company dedicated to interior design. Every environment featured is so chic! I am especially in love with the house in Spain.

The book is beautifully laid out with large-scale photos, minimal text, with inspiring quotes and Malene’s own black and white abstract paintings sprinkled throughout. It is right up my alley and I think you’ll find it incredibly inspiring as well. I couldn’t find many photos online, so I just photographed some of my favorite spreads on my dining table. The book was originally published in 2010 and is currently in its second printing. It is available for purchase here.  It seems Malene has a second book in the works which will be released in the fall– something to look forward to, for sure! {Malene seems to favor very neutral palettes in both her clothes and spaces. In Mallorca, everything was white with warm neutrals and the Copenhagen house is mostly dressed in shades of black, white, and grey.}
