A Palate Cleansing Kitchen

Kitchens are among my favorite spaces to design for clients because they are essentially the center of the home and get so much use. It’s fun to bridge the gap between form and function in a space that is so utilitarian, but presents the opportunity for show-stopping design. I tend to prefer more classic style in general, but that rings particularly true when it comes to kitchen and bath design since these rooms are quite costly to remodel, so it is best to take an approach that will endure the test of time.

Few people know about enduring style like the Brits and kitchen design is no exception. In England, deVol is known for crafting beautiful, fine custom kitchens, including this charmer in the Hertfordshire countryside. The kitchen is open and airy, with a clean-neutral palette. You’ll notice that the designer opted against upper cabinets, or cupboards, as they’re called in the UK. The absence of upper cabinets along with the skylights in the carriage house’s vaulted ceiling, make the kitchen feel rather bright and spacious. One of my favorite design elements in a kitchen is an island painted in a different color from the other cabinets. Here, deVol’s Damask is used on the cabinets around the perimeter, while Pantry Blue on the island creates a statement and anchors the room. The addition of aged brass hardware adds a touch of elegance.
