Currently Loving: Bullion Fringe

My design aesthetic is definitely traditional with a hint of modern. I love classic things that would have looked as good ten years ago as they will ten years from today; things that endure the test of time, particularly when they are interpreted in a modern way. A very traditional design element that feels completely fresh again to me recently is bullion fringe, which at once was considered over the top traditional, chintzy, and old fashioned. I find it to be a fresh way of updating traditional sofa silhouette. In can be ultra chic in ivory, but feels even more modern and fresh when done in a bold color. You’ve probably heard that no room should have too many “legs”, meaning that ideally, you shouldn’t have an abundance of furniture with exposed legs– something should serve to soften the space. I usually do this for my design clients with a beautiful, skirted sofa or skirted chairs. Bullion fringe is a great, unexpected alternative to a skirted piece and it certainly makes a statement.

{Tory Burch certainly loves bullion fringe! It is very much on brand with her modern prep aesthetic and is used on sofas in her personal office, in many of her flagship stores, as well as in her New York apartment designed by Daniel Romualdez.}

{How chic is all of the upholstery in this room by Jeffrey Bilhuber? Notice the different colored fabrics and trim on the armchairs. Meanwhile, the sofa has a lot going on with striped upholstery, tufts on the back and seat, as well as a bi-color bullion fringe, yet it all works flawlessly.} bullion fringe carrier and co

{In my interpretation, I’d keep things classic of course, pairing a cream colored sofa with matching bullion fringe with a pair of framed chinoiserie panels, classic French-style bergeres , a walnut chest, and blue and white garden stools. For a touch of modern glamour, I paired these pieces with a silver-leafed coffee table with Bunny Williams, antique mirrored sconces, a mercury glass lamp, Scalamandré Silk Tigre Velvet Pillows, and a beautiful blue and green abstract painting. To make things feel a little more relaxed, the space would be finished off with hand-block printed fabrics for the throw pillows on the sofa and a potted fern for a touch of green.}

  1. Love this look – timely post! I came to the same conclusion – inspired first by Jan Showers’ use of bullion fringe. So I reupholstered a knole sofa in a gorgeous gray mohair with platinum 7″ bullion. Serendipitous finds in my treasure hunts for fabric and such. The update is stunning grouped with lucite and brass coffee table and Italian chairs from the ’40s. A favorite space now. Will bullion fringe show up in your new home?

    • That sounds gorgeous, Beth! I love the sound of the pieces with which you paired your sofa. I’m not yet sure if I will use any fringe in my new house, but I am definitely planning on using it for a couple of clients!
