American Spirit: A Charming Summer Home on Cape Cod

With the Fourth of July just a few days away and last Friday’s landmark decision declaring marriage equality for all, I am feeling rather patriotic lately. As I was flipping through the July/August issue of ELLE DECOR, I came across San Francisco decorator, Ken Fulk’s ultra-charming Cape Cod cottage. Ken shares the home with his husband, Kurt Wootton and their three darling Golden Retrievers when they choose to spend time on the East Coast. The 19th century Massachussetts house needed some love when the couple first found it and was described by Ken as “the Grey Gardens of Provincetown”.  Enter a contractor who understood Ken’s vision for maintaining the charm and patina of the home– old plaster walls and crooked floors would remain– and over time, the house underwent a thoughtful renovation while maintaining all of its original charm. What could be more quintessentially American than a lovely, spirited old cottage on Cape Cod and a modern, jet setting family to inhabit it?

{The porch, adjacent to the kitchen, features a vintage bridge table and 19th-century thatched seat chairs. The floorboards on the porch and in the kitchen still retain their original paint in a beautiful shade of blue.}

{My favorite room in the house is the cozy library which features an antique brass bed (I can hear Bob Dylan singing “Lay Lady Lay”) covered in pillows made from indigo grain sacks. Notice the spectacular view of the harbor and the American flag dancing in the wind just beyond the window.}

  1. Wonderful post. I too think the library is the best room and that’s saying something on a house so well done. I’d never leave it.

  2. Paloma their style is so comfortable and chic! The library and dining are my favorites in this wonderful home!
