Fabulous Room Friday 07.11.14

This week’s fabulous room is a beautiful, non-traditional kitchen by Jessica Helgerson. I love the contrasts throughout this stunning kitchen. Helgerson utilized mixed metal finishes, black, shaker-style cabinetry against crisp white subway tile and carrara marble, with a dash of warmth, compliments of the aged brass cabinet hardware and lighting along with the warm wood island. As beautiful as the architecture and design elements are within this room, in my eyes, the thing that takes it from good to completely fabulous is the graphic, cement tile floor.

If you use Pinterest, chances are, you’ve seen a million white kitchens and lately, have probably seen your share of kitchens with contrasting cabinetry. This kitchen does not feel trendy at all to me even though it features a lot of elements that are currently very much on-trend. The fact that Helgerson chose enduring pieces– an enviable La Canche range, classic lighting fixtures, and again– that show-stopping floor, is what makes this kitchen timeless and not trendy. It is thoroughly modern and comfortable, yet has the charm that one would expect from an older house.  She honored the provenance of the space and the results are stunning.

{The black window frames add to the contrasts in this beautiful kitchen. Helgerson used Granada Tile’s Badajoz cement tiles in black and white along with a La Canche range, and a pair of Boston Hanging Pendants in Hand-Rubbed Brass from Circa Lighting.}

{Part of the appeal of this kitchen is that it has a charming seating area and plenty of shelving and cabinets, making it feel like a kitchen/library hybrid of sorts. I’m sure this must be the homeowner’s favorite place to hang out in the house!}

What are your thoughts on dark cabinets and contrasting elements such as the ones employed in this kitchen. Do you like this look or do you prefer a clean, monochromatic look? Have a great weekend!

  1. There are so many elements I love about this kitchen, Paloma. The black and white contrast with that amazing floor!

  2. We’re in the process of remodeling our kitchen right now and the plan is high contrast. Love that it’s a little unexpected and adds a bit of drama. The floor in the kitchen you featured is the star of the show. Amazing! Thanks for the inspiration!

  3. This is one of my favorites (I’ve probably pinned it multiple times despite the ‘pssst’ warnings from Pinterest)! I’d likely be hesitant to commit myself to black cabinetry at first, but I know I would love it if I did, particularly if I could pull off the perfect contrasting elements like in this space. I adore the feature wall of built-ins framing that gorgeous window. The sight line of that against those floors… I could frame that shot as art. For the past few days I’ve been considering painting some of my interior doors black, and seeing this space again may be my sign to forge ahead.
